Self-Catering Holiday Tips

When it comes to a self-catering holiday for couples, there is no better destination than Port Douglas Apartments.

Our one-bedroom units all come with a fully equipped kitchen, featuring electric cook top, icy cold fridge, and a dishwasher.  Whether you’re looking to cook up a storm or sample the local tropical bounty, our self-contained apartments have you covered.

The Essentials

Sonya ensures that every kitchen comes stocked with the basics to get you up and cooking with the minimum of fuss.  Additionally, you can stock up on the staples with ease.  Within walking distance of our tropical oasis is a Coles Supermarket, Night Owl Convenience Store, and specialty food outlets including Seashells Seafoods, Malone’s Butchery and Grant Street Kitchen

Home Cooked Dinner

But let’s be honest, no one wants to spend their tropical vacation standing in a supermarket.  Fortunately, neither do the good people of Port Douglas, so why not plan your dinner the Port Douglas way

Entree – Prawns straight from the trawler

Making regular visits into Port Douglas, the FV Santiago sells cooked and fresh prawns right off the back deck.  Join local residents and restaurants at the public jetty to see the catch brought in and to claim your share.

Main Course – Line Caught Fish

Is there fish fresher than one you caught yourself?  A day out on a fishing charter boat is not just great fun, but there is the very real chance you will come home with dinner. Ask the Crew of the M.V. Norseman to help prepare your catch and we’ll have the Poolside BBQ’s sizzling on your return.

Side Dish – Farm Fresh Fruit and Veggies

North Queensland is blessed with an abundance of tropical fruit and vegetables, many seldom seen outside of this area.  At the Mossman Markets and Port Douglas Markets (held every Saturday and Sunday respectively) you can meet with the farmers, see what is in season and stock your fridge with some super tasty, healthy choices.

Dessert – Hand Crafted Chocolate and Local Coffee

The Atherton Tablelands, just one hour drive from Port Douglas, is Australia’s premium coffee growing region.  The good people at The Coffee Works Gourmet Store in Macrossan St take the local beans, roast them to perfection and sell them alongside a startling array of hand-crafted chocolates.  That’s dessert sorted.

Sonya Says:  Help! No meal is complete without a crusty loaf, and we can’t decide which is the best loaf of fresh bread in town.  It’s either the toast cut loaf from Mockas Pies or the ciabatta from Grant Street Kitchen.  Grab one from the oven and cast your vote…
